Personal Growth

Cancer biology has really opened my eyes to the various factors that contribute to cancer development. I really enjoyed this class due to the in-depth knowledge and hard work that Dr. Dance has put into cancer biology and cancer research. The class conveyed strong information on how diet, environmental factors, genetics, lifestyle, exercise, and pathogens can affect the development and progression of cancer in the human body. I found it very interesting that simple alterations in biological processes are associated with prevention and progression of cancer. Cancer biology helped me thoroughly understand how oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, repair mechanisms, and biological influential factors play the biggest roles in cancer development and prevention. I am fascinated by the many repair mechanisms the human body has in prevention of genetic instability and prevention of carcinogenesis. I feel that Dr. Dance was an excellent professor because of the many approaches she took to help the comprehension and retention of molecular pathways associated with cancer. I felt this class also helped me understand various growth and suppression pathways in my research project associated with breast cancer. I would recommend this course for future junior and senior biology majors interested in cancer biology to further extend their knowledge in molecular pathways associating in cancer development.
